Authorities seize dozens of illegal donation boxes from Melaka eateries

MELAKA: Dozens of illegal donation boxes at eateries here were seized during an operation by the state Religious Department (JAIM).

Its director Datuk Che Sukri Che Mat said on Friday (March 3) that 30 such boxes had been confiscated since January of this year after some associations were found to have misused religion for personal gain.

"This syndicate collects money using religion, orphans and underage children to gain sympathy.

"Placing donation boxes at eateries without a permit is illegal,” he said.

Che Sukri said 21 of these boxes were seized in the Melaka Tengah district followed by four in Alor Gajah and three in Jasin.

"The enforcement efforts were carried out in 14 operations since the beginning of this year," he added.

Che Sukri said 19 donation boxes were seized during a similar operation last year.

He said under state Islamic law, those placing such boxes without permits can face a fine of up to RM3,000 or a maximum of two years' jail.

He also urged the public not to support the unauthorised collection of funds.
