Budget 2023: MPs thump desks in support when Anwar pledges to fight corruption

KUALA LUMPUR: A pledge by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to fight corruption roused MPs in the House during the tabling of Budget 2023.

Anwar said all government agencies including the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police are currently investigating wrong-doing by those suspected of corruption.

“Whether or not they are involved in the Pandora papers, investigations are ongoing on those who are corrupted.

“We shouldn’t be threatened and scared because we are merely exposing (corruption). The government of the day has to send a clear message that corruption and wrongdoing cannot be continued in this country.” said Anwar in Parliament on Friday (Feb 24).

MPs were heard thumping on their desks and cheering as Anwar spoke.

“Thank you, I see that all 222 MPs are supporting this,” added Anwar.

Several Malaysian politicians who were named in the Pandora Papers are currently being probed.

The Pandora Papers are a data leak involving 2.94 terabytes of data which cited the opening of offshore accounts involving former and current government and political leaders around the world, including Malaysia.

Besides that, several leaders are also being probed for misusing Covid-19 funds and also various scandals including PenjanaKerjaya and among others.
