Father of two freed of drug charges

SEGAMAT: A father of two is walking out a free man after the Sessions Court here acquitted and discharged him over a heroin possession charge.

The 47-year-old businessman cried after Sessions Judge Norina Zainol Abidin read out her decision to acquit and discharge him without calling for his defence here on Tuesday (Feb 21).

He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and could have been sentenced under Section 39A(2) of the same Act to life imprisonment and 10 strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

Norina made the decision after the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against the accused for possessing 6.52g of heroin.

The defence argued that the drug, which was found during a police raid four years ago, did not belong to Nazaruddin but to another man who was at the scene.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Raudhah Mazman prosecuted the case while the accused was represented by lawyers G. Subramaniam Nair and S. Selvanteran.
