Zahid says confident of positive outcome from ROS over no-contest motion in Umno issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he is confident that there will be a positive response from the Registrar of Societies (ROS) on the issue of the no-contest motion during the Umno general assembly.

He explained that the party was given a period of 60 days to give the necessary response on the issue and the party had already given its feedback.

"I am confident that we will receive a positive response even before the period of 60 days from the ROS," he told reporters during a press conference at the parliament's media centre on Wednesday (Feb 15).

On Jan 31, senior Umno representatives met and provided an explanation to the ROS on the passing of the no-contest motion.

The meeting was set following the actions of two Umno members who, on Jan 20, had lodged complaints with the ROS to review the additional motion on no-contest for the top two posts approved during the general assembly.

Ahmad Zahid also expressed confidence that all the party rules and regulations were followed by the party's permanent chairman during the last party general assembly.

"We have explained Clause 9.3 and 9.4 of the party constitution to the ROS.

“And since the Umno general assembly is the highest authority of the party, the decision to add the motion (on the no-contest for the top two post) has been explained to ROS.

"The matter had also been reviewed by ROS, our lawyers as well as the Umno secretary-general," he said.

On the party polls, he said that the nomination application at all levels including the wings and the national level had been accepted.

"I am confident there are some who had expressed intention to contest, based on social media postings, but have yet to register.

"I am taking the approach that all the positions that can be contested can be participated by all," he said.

Ahmad Zahid also said that a campaigning guideline, which was issued by the party's election committee chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Samad, must be followed.

"In this matter, monitoring will be conducted but campaigns on social media are allowed," he said.

The Umno election will take place from Feb 1 to March 18.
