KUALA LUMPUR: Instead of flagging a driver for a traffic offence, two traffic policemen helped escort a woman in labour to the hospital.
For this, l/kpl Mohammad Rizwan Razali and l/kpl Mohammad Najmi Daud received certificates of recognition for their kind act.
L/kpl Mohammad Rizwan Razali said at first he thought the driver, who was the woman’s husband, was committing an offence by driving against traffic flow during the incident on Jan 23 in Kelantan.
“When the incident happened, my colleague l/kpl Mohammad Najmi and I had just concluded an operation nearby.
“I saw the car heading against traffic from Tangok to Jelawat.
“I stopped the car and the frantic driver said his wife is on the verge of giving birth.
“I then obtained permission from my superior to escort them to a nearby clinic,” he said when met during the closing ceremony for Op Selamat yesterday.
Both l/kpl Mohammad Rizwan and l/kpl Mohammad Najmi received the certificates from Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
“Once we reached the clinic, there was no ambulance available. I then decided to escort the couple to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II in Kota Baru some 20km away.
“I was only performing my duty in assisting a member of the public who is facing hardship and emergency.
“This recognition is an impetus for me to give the best service for the people,” he said.
L/kpl Mohammad Najmi said they used an alternative route in escorting the couple.
“Traffic was heavy that day so we decided to use an alternative route to Kota Baru after it was approved by our superior.
“I am glad the woman managed to give birth safely without any complications,” he said.
