KUALA LUMPUR: Some 2,000 Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers will be deployed at accident hotspots and other areas during the Chinese New Year period.JPJ deputy director-general (Planning/Operations) Aedy Fadly Ramli said the officers would conduct focused patrols.
“At the same time, some of our officers will go undercover to monitor the situation on buses. They will take appropriate action if any offences are committed by drivers.
“We prefer to utilise patrols and go undercover instead of conducting roadblocks as we don’t want to cause unnecessary traffic congestion,” he said during the launch of the integrated operation at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) yesterday.JPJ officers would focus on 77 depots and 28 main bus terminals during the nationwide operation from Jan 18-28, he said.
“These include performing technical checks on express buses while the National Anti-Drug Agency will conduct urine tests for the drivers. Since Wednesday, no bus driver at TBS has tested positive for drugs,” he said.
JPJ officers would look out for seven main offences – using a mobile phone while driving, cutting the queue, running the red light, overtaking on the double line, speeding, not wearing seat belts or helmets and driving in the emergency lane, Aedy Fadly said.
“Those who commit such offences will not only receive summonses but demerits under the Kejara system as well,” he said.
“We also urge those with information on traffic offences to report it during the duration of the integrated operation via the MyJPJ app under the e-aduan@JPJ tab or email aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my,” he said.
Meanwhile, Aedy Fadly said JPJ would not hesitate to seize vehicles that flout the road ban on goods carrying vehicles during the festive period.
