Batang Kali landslide: Ground-penetrating radar deployed to help locate missing victims

HULU SELANGOR: Ground-penetrating radar equipment is being deployed to aid search and rescue (SAR) operations for the nine remaining landslide victims at Father's Organic Farm on Sunday (Dec 18).

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis (pic) said the Survey and Mapping Department and the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) handed over the equipment, which would help detect victims buried underground.

"In addition to helping trace anyone in the ground, these tools also help to measure the thickness of landslides," he told reporters at the scene on Sunday (Dec 18).

He said a total of eight excavators were also in operation at the site.

"They are currently assigned to sectors A and C for dredging and earth moving work.

"The method currently used is to move the preliminary soil, which is debris, to a depth of about 0.9m to 1.2m.

"After that, dredging will stop and further inspections will be carried out, including by the K9 Detection Unit," he said.

He added that this was to prevent any of the buried victims from being hit accidentally by the excavator buckets.
