KUALA LUMPUR: Those entering or leaving through the gates of Istana Negara were watched closely by members of the media for any hint of a new prime minister and government.

Leaders of political parties and coalitions were initially expected to submit statutory declarations in support of their alliance and choice of prime minister before a 2pm deadline yesterday.

However, this was later extended to 2pm today.

Members of the media, many with cameras and umbrellas, had turned up in the morning for the long wait at Gate 2 of the palace.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah unexpectedly came to speak to them.

He advised all Malaysians to stay calm and be patient while waiting for the formation of a new federal government.

“Be patient, it needs a little time. Stay calm.

“The caretaker government is still there, still running as usual,” he added.

When asked about the latest development, His Majesty told the media to refer to the statement issued by the palace.

“I will not make any remark. Just follow the statement issued by Istana Negara,” he said.

Later, Bernama reported that caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob arrived at Istana Negara for an audience with Sultan Abdullah.

Although the purpose of his audience with the King is unclear, it is believed he was summoned to the palace.

Ismail Sabri’s car arrived at Istana Negara’s Gate 1 at about 3pm and left at around 4.30pm. He was seen waving to the press.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali was seen leaving soon after.
