Najib's 'Optimus Prime' codename rolls out again in 1MDB trial testimony


KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was referred to as iconic Transformers hero "Optimus Prime" by fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, the High Court here heard.

Prosecution witness Joanna Yu, who was Najib's former relationship manager at AmBank, said this during an examination-in-chief conducted by deputy public prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram in Najib's 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial here on Monday (Nov 7).

The witness was referred to a transcript of her Blackberry Messenger messages with Low, better known as Jho Low, that spoke about Najib's bank account.

In the message, Low purportedly told Yu that "OP" would likely be closing his bank account.

Yu: Najib.

Yu, 51, had given similar testimony about Najib's codename in the latter's RM42mil SRC International Sdn Bhd trial in 2019.

Optimus Prime is the leader of the heroic Autobots in the Transformers animated series and movies.

Najib, 69, is on trial for 25 charges in total – four for abuse of power that allegedly brought him financial benefit to the tune of RM2.28bil; and 21 for money laundering involving the same amount of money.

The hearing continues before Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah in the afternoon.
