JPJ to step up checks on racing vehicles following Terengganu tragedy


MELAKA: More stringent checks will be conducted on vehicles used in motorsports activities, says the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Its director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim said JPJ would work with police to conduct checks on such vehicles.

"We have always placed priority on drag and drift racing as it is considered a high-risk sporting activity.

"JPJ will work closely with police to conduct technical checks on vehicles involved in such races to avoid a repetition of the Terengganu incident," he said after opening the 20th anniversary of the JPJ academy at Tiang Dua at Ayer Molek here on Monday (Oct 17).

Zailani was asked to comment on the accident that claimed the life of drag racer Muhamad Hafez Jamal Jamaluddin during the Battle of the Kings 2022 race in Terengganu on Sunday (Oct 16).
