Najib to still seek UK lawyer’s counsel if appeal is successful

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pic) will still seek King’s Counsel Jonathan Laidlaw to represent him should he be allowed a rehearing of his appeal for his RM42mil SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

Najib’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed that they would be keen on bringing in the expertise of the renowned criminal lawyer in the event Najib’s appeal review is successful.

“Laidlaw’s expertise in high-profile fraud and corruption cases would make him a valuable addition to Najib’s defence team.

“We are hoping that the review would either lead to Najib being completely acquitted of his sentence, or at the very least, be granted a rehearing with new judges,” Shafee told the media in front of the High Court building here yesterday.

Shafee also stated he was confident that the appeal’s review would be held sometime between Oct 21 and 26.

On Aug 23, the Federal Court upheld the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision to sentence Najib to 12 years’ jail and a fine of RM210mil.

Najib then filed for a review of the Federal Court’s decision on Sept 6, claiming there was a miscarriage of justice.

Najib is currently serving his sentence at the Kajang Prison.
