GE15: Najib to be on Barisan's Pekan candidates list

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pic) will be named as one of Barisan Nasional's five potential candidates for Pekan, says the Umno division deputy chief in the constituency.

Zamri Ramly said Najib, who is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence, has been Pekan MP since 1976, except for the 1982-86 term when he was mentri besar of Pahang.

“There are no plans for Najib’s children (Mohd Nizar and Nooryana Najwa) to contest the parliamentary seat if he is not eligible to contest.

“Instead, whoever is chosen will return it if they win to Najib, if he gets pardoned,” Zamri was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

However, Zamri declined to reveal the other four names.

He said Mohd Nizar, who is the Pekan Umno Youth chief, has been earmarked to contest a state seat in the constituency.

There are four state seats under the Pekan – Chini, Bebar, Peramu Jaya and Pulau Manis.

Pekan has been held by Najib’s family since 1959, first with Najib’s father, second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, and then by Najib.

During Najib's term as Pahang mentri besar, the seat was held by Barisan's Mohamed Amin Daud.

Najib, whose conviction in the RM42mil SRC International case was upheld by the Federal Court on Aug 23, has filed for a review to overturn the decision and is also seeking a Royal pardon.
