Cops nab wanted man in Kepala Batas for possessing gun, drugs

KEPALA BATAS: Police nabbed a man for the possession of a pistol, several other dangerous weapons and drugs here on Monday (Sept 12).

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Radzi Ahmad said the 40-year-old suspect was detained at about 7.30pm during an operation conducted by the D9 unit of the district police headquarters.

"The suspect was driving a car when he was stopped by police in front of a restaurant at Lorong Mak Mandin, Butterworth," he said, adding that the suspect had been stopped for suspicious behaviour.

The suspect was found to be in possession of a pistol along with four bullets as well as two transparent packets containing drugs believed to be ganja and syabu.

A further check of the suspect's car turned up a machete, a keris, a pocket knife, a sheathed knife, and a small axe hidden underneath the driver’s seat.

"Further checks found that the suspect was wanted for a rioting with weapons case and he had a record of five previous offences," he said at a press conference, adding that the suspect had been remanded for seven days beginning Tuesday (Sept 13).

The case is investigated under Section 8 of Firearms Act (Heavier Penalty) 1971, Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 and

Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Weapons Act 1958.

In a separate case, a house break-in gang known as “Geng Pendang” has been crippled after five suspects were arrested in several locations in Kedah.

ACP Mohd Radzi said four of the suspects were detained during Ops Pintu that was conducted on Sept 10 at about 6pm.

"The suspects aged 29 to 39 were detained at Sungai Petani, Pendang and Alor Setar on Sept 10," he said.

He said the suspects had criminal and drug records.

He said another man, aged 52, believed to be the person who acted as a fence for the gang, was also arrested.

ACP Mohd Radzi said police confiscated a car, branded bag, handphones, Thai currency amounting to 5,040 Baht, tools and equipment used for house break-in and some RM300 in cash.

He said the suspects were remanded until this Thursday (Sept 15) and the case was investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code.
