Video of 90-year-old man scaling Mt Kinabalu goes viral


KOTA KINABALU: A video of an elderly man making his way to the top of Mount Kinabalu has gone viral.

Sabah Parks Director Maklarin Lakim said the man named Buatin Blandong and was 90 years old.

“If our records are correct, he is the oldest Malaysian to have scaled Mount Kinabalu and reached the summit,” he said when contacted.

He said on Sept 5, Buatin had started his journey from Panar Laban at around 5am and reached the peak at 2.20pm, after a 2km hike.

An average hiker can reach the Peak from Panar Laban within five hours.

From social media, it is learnt that Buatin, who hails from Papar district, is an avid hiker, jogger and active in sports.

Social media users have expressed their awe of his stamina and strength to scale the mountain.

In the video, which was believed to have been recorded and shared by a mountain guide, Buatin can be heard saying he wants to break his own record and that he had brought along an inhaler with him.
