MCMC investigating social media post allegedly insulting Selangor Ruler

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is launching an investigation into a Facebook post insulting Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Sultan.

The MCMC said it has commenced investigations into a Facebook user as the content touched on race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.

The MCMC said an individual had been summoned and his statement was recorded at the Sri Petaling police station.

A mobile phone and a SIM card was also seized.

The MCMC said the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a fine of up to RM500,000 and imprisonment of up to two years or both if convicted.

"The MCMC views the dissemination of online content that carries false information or insults against the royal institution with great seriousness particularly when such content threatens national harmony.

"We wish to remind the public to use social media platforms responsibly and to refrain from creating or spreading content that is against the law," it said.
