Amira: Muda may work with Pakatan, can’t go it alone

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) may be working with Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming general election, just as the youth-based party did in the Johor state election earlier this year.

Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz (pic) said the party believes in cooperating with others that share common values with it.

“Muda still believes that as we move towards the next general election, we cannot be working alone.

“We need to work with friends that share the same principles and policies as us.

“As such, it’s possible that we will be working with Pakatan as we did during the last Johor state election.

“However, that is not a decision for Muda to make on its own as we need to also discuss with other parties,” Amira Aisya, who is also Puteri Wangsa assemblyman, told the press when met at Taman Mount Austin Flats here.

She was responding to questions on whether the party was looking at working with Pakatan or contesting solo in the 15th General Election.

Amira Aisya also said Muda has yet to start any seat negotiations with Pakatan as her party has been focused on strengthening itself.

Going by the Johor election, Pakatan as a coalition will begin discussion among its component parties first, she noted.

“We hope they will later have another discussion with us. We do not want to cause any division as we move towards the general election,” she said.

Muda, said Amira Aisya, will try to avoid seat clashes with any parties under Pakatan, which comprises PKR, DAP, Amanah and Upko.

“Of course, we do not want a repeat of what happened during the Johor election.

“We hope that discussions with Pakatan will be more open this time to prevent that happening again,” she added.

At the Johor state election back in March, Muda contested seven seats and won one – Puteri Wangsa.

Among other seats it contested was Larkin, which saw a six-cornered fight, with PKR’s Dr Zamil Najwah Arbain representing Pakatan.

The seat was won by Umno’s Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, who is now state youth, sports, entrepreneur development, cooperatives and human resources committee chairman.
