PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry views seriously the issue of public displays of smoking and vaping by artistes in public or when on stage, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
"These actions show bad example to the society at large, especially children and youth.
"From the health standpoint, smoking or vaping brings ill health both to the smokers and those around them," said the Health DG on Facebook on Tuesday (Aug 23).
He said the actions and habits of celebrities were always watched and imitated by society.
"As such, they have a responsibility to show good behaviour which will be an example to society.
Dr Noor Hisham said this was also in line with the Health Ministry's proposed Bill on Tobacco Control and Smoking 2022 so that a comprehensive smoking product control can be introduced to curb the smoking habit among Malaysians.
"The Health Ministry urges all layers of the society including artistes and celebrities to help these efforts and ensure smoking will be a culture which will not be accepted anymore.
Malaysian singer Noh Salleh came under fire recently for appearing on stage at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week with a cigarette in his hands.
The issue sparked a backlash on social media, as Noh was earlier seen vaping in an interview.
