Committee to probe KLIA incident

PETALING JAYA: A committee chaired by Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun has been formed to investigate allegations that a high-ranking civil servant publicly berated an Immigration Department officer, says Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

He added that the committee was set up following the Cabinet meeting last Friday.

“The committee is responsible for conducting an in-depth investigation to provide due judgement to both parties.

“The outcomes and recommendations of the investigation will be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for further consideration,” he said yesterday.

Other members of the committee are Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, Auditor-General Datuk Seri Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid, and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Mohd Zuki added that the committee will be meeting immediately following its formation.

On Saturday, Ismail Sabri said the Cabinet had agreed to the formation of a special committee to investigate the incident.

He added that everyone has been advised to be fair to all parties pending the outcome of the probe led by Mohd Zuki.

He also called for all members of the public sector to work in harmony with one another.

In the alleged scolding incident last Wednesday, the Immigration operations head at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was said to have been at the receiving end because it was believed that there were no Immigration officers stationed at the VIP lane between 8.40am and 9.40am.

The Malaysian Immigration Authorities Association and Peninsular Malaysia Immigration Service Union released statements on the incident, with alleged accounts of the incident making the rounds on social media.

Both associations were critical of the incident.

However, the Public Service Department (PSD) dismissed claims that the director-general of Public Service publicly berated the Immigration officer.

“PSD takes this matter seriously and would like to emphasise that all charges against the director-general are baseless and maliciously intended to tarnish his image as a high government official,” the department said in a statement last Thursday.

PSD said the director-general of Public Service had reprimanded the Immigration officer at KLIA for non-compliance with practices and procedures where officials did not check the travel documents and passports of the director-general and his delegation abroad.

“In fact, they were directed directly to the Customs inspection counter to continue their journey.

“PSD is of the view that non-compliance in checking immigration documents such as passports is a serious offence under the law.

“In fact, officials who do not comply with immigration regulations abroad may be subject to disciplinary action,” it added.
