Graduate inspired to repay parents’ time and sacrifice

KUANTAN: The successes achieved by his parents has inspired Hussein Al-Faiz Mohamed Ahmed Hafez to work hard towards his goal.

The 26-year-old automotive engineering graduate was presented two prestigious awards at the 16th University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) convocation ceremony yesterday.

He received the UMW Holdings Bhd Excellence Award and the Excellence Prize for the Dual-Degree Programme (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure Award), sponsored by the German Engineers Association, from UMP pro-chancellor Tan Sr Dr Abi Musa Asaari Mohamed Nor.

Hussein Al-Faiz is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Tenaga Nasional.

He has also started a business with his friend through Tunas Usahawan Belia Bumiputera by setting up GREST Engineering and Consultancy Services in Pekan, some 50km from here.

The eldest son of Prof Mohamed Ahmed Hafez – a lecturer at a private higher learning institution – and dentist Dr Sham Awab, Hussein Al-Faiz said his parents had high hopes for him so he would set a good example for his younger brother and sister.

“My parents are my idols. My father came from a poor family in Egypt, and gained knowledge to change the fate of his family before marrying my mother.

“Now, it’s my time to repay their time, money and sacrifice in raising me,” he told Bernama.

Hussein Al-Faiz also shared his experience in overcoming the challenges he faced while studying at the University of Applied Sciences, Germany, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“During the lockdown, all classes were conducted online and I recorded them in German before translating them to English, which took a long time,” he said.

Meanwhile, UMP vice-president Datuk Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin said the four-day convocation, which started yesterday, would see 4,082 students graduate.
