Shafie remains coy over Muda's move to Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Opposition Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal was coy about Malaysian United Democratic Alliance’s (Muda) plan to formally set foot in Sabah.

Shafie did not directly respond to Muda’s plans to officially launch in Sabah ahead of the 15th General Election.

Instead, Shafie gave a general response that Warisan was an Opposition that would work with other Opposition parties on issues of common interests.

"Warisan is an Opposition party. We are not in Pakatan Harapan but we are in the Opposition in Parliament.

"We will support issues (with other Opposition) that are important to us. Sometimes, we don't stand together with the rest of the Opposition if the issue at hand is not in the interest of the people or state," he told reporters during a breaking of fast event with locals.

He added that Warisan remains an Opposition that is friendly to all.

"We have no enemies... DAP my friends; Umno also my friends. In politics, we (Warisan) are the Opposition," he said without directly referring to Muda's move to Sabah.

Muda led by Syed Saddiq Syed Abul Rahman in December last year announced that they were in "coalition" with Warisan.

However, relations between Muda and Warisan have been perceived to have been strained when Muda cut an electoral pact with Pakatan's DAP and Amanah during the Johor state elections.

Syed Saddiq, who was in Sabah to set up Muda, insisted to reporters on Sunday (April 17) that relations with Warisan and Shafie remained "very good" even after the Johor polls.

He said Muda was strengthening bridges for the Opposition, but felt that any discussions were best done between parties, as the people were fed up with such talk publicly.

He also did not indicate any plans for seats the party was looking at.
