Toddler dies from alleged child abuse, mum detained

TELUK INTAN: A two-year-old girl died after she was believed to have been abused by her mother last Wednesday (March 9).

The incident came to light after the 33-year-old mother sent her to a private hospital here, claiming the child was having shortness of breath.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Adnan Basri said the doctor who attended to the victim at the time confirmed that the child had died.

According to him, the initial examination on the victim's body found that there were wounds around the nose, chin, ears and back of the head.

“There were also traces of large wounds on the right arm, pinkie and index finger of the left hand.

"The examination also detected bite marks near the shoulder of the left arm, scars on the left leg, bruises below the left knee, bruises on the right shoulder and several bruises all over the back of the victim's body," he said.

ACP Ahmad added that police arrested the victim's biological mother when she surrendered herself at the Teluk Intan Police Station on the same day around 5pm.

He said the initial investigation found that the woman allegedly abused the victim, who was the third child of four siblings, due to stress because the victim was often crying.
