KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will benefit from Budget 2027 emphasis on Sabah’s development, the strengthening of the tourism sector and enhanced international connectivity, says state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin (pic).
He said the RM935mil allocation for the tourism and cultural sector nationwide will also provide Sabah with opportunities to enhance destination promotion, tourism product development and the preservation of cultural heritage ahead of Visit Sabah 2027.
“Sabah welcomes the emphasis given to the tourism sector, particularly efforts to improve facilities, strengthen promotional initiatives, and expand international flight networks.
“This initiative is in line with our efforts to increase tourist arrivals, encourage longer stays, and ensure that the economic benefits of tourism are enjoyed by more Sabahans,” he said reacting to the Budget.
Jafry also described the announced matching grants for international and charter flights as a strategic measure that could strengthen Sabah’s air connectivity with key markets, including China, India, Central Asia, and Europe.
He said improved air connectivity is crucial in enhancing Sabah’s competitiveness as an international destination while creating greater opportunities for the local tourism industry.
On conservation, Jafry welcomed the attention given to Danum Valley, which has been identified as a potential heritage site for facility upgrades and potential Unesco recognition.
“Tourism development and environmental conservation must go hand in hand. Sabah’s biodiversity treasures are invaluable assets that must continue to be protected through responsible development approaches,” he said.
He said that improved road networks and basic infrastructure were essential to expanding access to rural tourism destinations and stimulating economic activities within local communities.
“Our priority is not only to bring more tourists to Sabah, but also to ensure they explore more destinations, stay longer, and provide direct benefits to local communities.
“My ministry will continue to work closely with Federal ministries and agencies to maximise the initiatives under Budget 2027 and strengthen Sabah’s position as a competitive and sustainable international tourism destination,” he added.
He also welcomed the allocation of RM18.7bil for Sabah, an increase from RM17.6bil this year, reflects the Federal Government’s continued commitment to strengthening the state's development.
