No state elections in Selangor, Penang, Negri until 2023, says Pakatan council

PETALING JAYA: The three states under the control of Pakatan Harapan have been advised not to dissolve their state assemblies until they fulfil their full term next year.

The coalition's presidential council said it had advised the state governments of Selangor, Penang and Negri Sembilan not to dissolve the assemblies until their term ends in 2023.

"The decision takes into account the economic situation of the people who are still severely affected by the massive floods, the Covid-19 pandemic, declining incomes, as well as the sharp rise in cost of living," the council said in a statement on Thursday (March 17).

It also stressed that the focus right now should be on saving the people and reviving the economy.

The statement comes after the resounding state election victories of Barisan Nasional in Melaka and Johor, which triggered strident calls, especially from Umno, to have the 15th general election soon.

The mandate for the current federal administration lasts until May 2023 and a general election has to be called in 60 days after that or in July 2023.

This week, PAS leadership had also said the three states helmed by the party – Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu – would not call for state elections until the full term was served.
