Man drowns after falling into sea near Weld Quay


GEORGE TOWN: A man was found drowned near the ferry terminal at Weld Quay here after falling into the sea on Friday (Jan 21).

He was initially seen struggling to stay afloat while members of the public attempted to rescue him.

Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Mohd Rizal Abu Bakar said they headed to the scene after reports were received from the public around 3.15pm.

"They reported that the man sank below the surface after struggling and we conducted a search from the jetty.

"At 4.03pm, someone reported that they had found a body under the jetty.

"The body was retrieved and handed over to police," he said.
