Medical assistant drowns at Chemerong Waterfall in Terengganu


DUNGUN: A 25-year-old medical assistant has drowned at the Chemerong Waterfall here.

Al Muktafi Billah Shah Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer I Kama Suhaimi Abdullah said that the victim, Mohd Ikmal Awid, who was stationed at the Kemaman Hospital, was found drowned at noon on Friday (Oct 2).

He said his team received a report of the incident at 11.46am, but firefighters who arrived at the scene found that the victim, who was from Kota Belud, Sabah, had already been found by his friends.

"The victim was swimming with six friends when he and another person were suddenly swept away by currents," he said in a statement on Friday.

Suhaimi said the victim's friend was successfully rescued but the victim could not be saved.

"About 15 minutes later, his friends made another dive and found the victim," he said.

He added that the victim was pronounced dead by a Health Ministry medical officer before being handed over to the police for further action. – Bernama
