IPOH: PAS has applauded the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council for banning the sale of alcohol at convenience stores in Muslim-majority areas in the district.
In a statement on Friday (Dec 31), the party’s Youth wing chief Hafez Sabri congratulated the council on implementing the ban.
“We are thankful to the council for (this) decision made for the New Year.
“This shows the... voices of all the councillors from PAS and the community have shown results and a solution to the matter.
“The welfare of Muslim workers in such stores is protected as well,” he said.
Prior to this, a similar decision had been taken by the Selama council.
Hafez said such efforts could help curb cases of drink-driving, domestic violence and vandalism of public property.
“I am hoping all other local councils in the state will take similar steps like the one taken by the Kuala Kangsar and Selama district councils,” he added.
On Thursday (Dec 30) council president Zulqarnain Mohamad said after a full board meeting that the ban was on alcohol sales in Muslim-majority areas.
He said, however, that the sale of alcohol in non-Muslim majority areas was still allowed with a few restrictions imposed.
