IPOH: Random offers claiming to help people fast-track their umrah trips should be ignored, says Idris Ahmad.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) said people who are still on the waiting list to perform their haj in Mecca should only pay heed to official announcements by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).
“I understand that there are people trying to make a quick buck through scams. They know that people have money in their Employees Provident Fund and would use up their savings to go for their umrah,” he said.
“People just need to listen to official announcements by the TH chief executive officer or from me,” he added at a press conference after presenting aid to hardcore poor folk under the TH Prihatin programme at Menara TH here on Saturday (Nov 20).
Idris also called on the people who received the offers via text messages to inform TH.
“If we can get the (phone) numbers, we will report them to the authorities for action to be taken. I hope that which is holy will not be taken advantage of,” he said.
Separately, Idris said the government has submitted seven names to be members of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate issues related to TH.
He said the names will be revealed after getting consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
“The list has been finalised after a Cabinet meeting yesterday. It will be presented to the King by the Prime Minister during his weekly audience with the Ruler,” he said, adding that the RCI will not affect the daily running of its operations.
The government had on July 14 announced the setting up of the RCI under the Commission of Inquiry Act 1950 (Act 119).
It is to ensure that a transparent and trustworthy internal investigation can be carried out to find out whether TH has conducted its mandate professionally in managing the deposits of Muslims.
