PETALING JAYA: The number of Covid-19 daily cases in the country has dipped below the 5,000 mark for a second time in a week, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
“A total of 4,979 new Covid-19 cases were recorded on Sunday (Oct 31)," he said in a statement.
Previously, 4,782 cases were reported nationwide on Monday (Oct 25), marking the first time cases had dipped below the 5,000 mark since a surge in more than 20,000 daily cases nationwide recorded in early August this year.
Of the new cases, he said that 85 were under category 3,4 and 5, which required admission and treatment at hospitals while 4,894 cases were under category 1 and 2 which required home quarantine.
He said that the new infections have brought the total number of infections to 2,471,642 cases since the pandemic began last year.
“A total of 6,127 patients had recovered on Sunday (Oct 31), bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,374,761 cases or 96.1%,” he added.
Of those seeking treatment, he said that 562 patients are currently in intensive care units (ICU), with 560 confirmed cases, while 61 cases are under investigation.
“A total of 326 cases require breathing assistance with 220 confirmed cases, while 106 cases are still under investigation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said that six new Covid-19 clusters were detected as of Sunday, bringing the total number of active clusters to 428.
Of the new clusters, he said eight cases were detected at a workplace in Batu Pahat, 11 community cases in Ulu Selangor and 16 community cases in Kota Baru.
The other clusters include 24 cases from the education sector in Seberang Prai Utara and Kulim, and 33 cases from institutions of higher learning clusters in Seremban, Kuala Pilah and Kuantan.
