Police ranks can't be bought, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: All matters of promotions and transfers in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are based on procedures and official channels, says Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

The Inspector-General of Police said such matters are not dealt with haphazardly, in fact, promotions and transfers are conducted through interviews and careful selection processes by the top officers within the police force.

"Each process of promotion also includes recommendations from the IGP, deputy IGP, department directors and state police chiefs.

"In the police force, the promotion process is not something that could be bought or paid for, as it goes through stringent filtering based on procedures.

"Rank is awarded by top leadership within the PDRM based on high commitment and dedication shown by each officer and personnel member in carrying out their duties, as well as giving the best service to the people," he said when contacted on Thursday (Oct 13).

He was commenting on allegations by a woman who claimed that a police officer with the rank of Deputy Superintendent had threatened to kill her after she had demanded he return the RM100,000 she had loaned him supposedly to secure the rank of Superintendent.

"Investigation was started soon after the report was lodged.

"The Integrity and Standard Compliance Department is conducting a disciplinary probe which would run parallel to the criminal investigation, which is the death threat as well as an investigation into the issue of RM100,000 to secure promotion," he said.

The case is also being investigated under Section 323 and Section 506 of the Penal Code, he added.

It was reported that two suspects have been arrested for allegedly threatening to hurt the woman.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed had said that police are still in the midst of investigations.

"We can assure the public that we will conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and will not compromise with anyone including police officers and rank and file personnel who commit crimes and break the law," he said.
