Covid-19: Death toll passes 26,000 mark with 208 total fatalities reported

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Covid-19 death toll has now passed the 26,000 mark as the Health Ministry reports another 208 total coronavirus deaths on Wednesday (Sept 29).

Since the pandemic began, a total of 26,143 people in Malaysia have succumbed to Covid-19.

Based on the ministry’s Github data repository, four out of the 208 deaths actually occurred on Wednesday, while the rest are backlogged cases dating to a few months back that could not be confirmed previously.

Of the reported deaths on Wednesday, 64 were fatalities classified as “brought-in-dead” (BID) cases.

This brings the total number of BID cases in the country to 5,232.

Out of the 208 reported deaths on Wednesday, 80 of them were from the Klang Valley.

The rest were in Johor (32), Penang (30), Sabah (22), Kedah (12), Kelantan (nine), Perak (eight), Terengganu (seven), Perlis (four), Pahang (four), Sarawak (two),

Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Labuan and Putrajaya reported zero death cases.

Based on the latest graphs on the ministry’s CovidNow website, the country’s death cases are still on a declining trend.

The average number of deaths in the last seven days - based on actual date of death - is 88.

This continues the steady decline from early August, when the average was around 300 death cases a day.

On Tuesday, Malaysia reported 12,426 new Covid-19 cases and 17,000 recoveries.

Active Covid-19 cases went down to 169,718 - a reduction of more than 4,000 cases from the previous day.

Of the total active cases, 140,598 or 82.8% are patients with mild infections who are undergoing home quarantine.

Another 18,957 (11.2%) are those under isolation at low-risk quarantine centres (PKRC), while 9,185 (5.4%) are hospitalised.

The number of patients in intensive care units (ICU) is now 978 (0.5%), with 565 (0.3%) on ventilator support.

The national ICU utilisation rate is currently at 70.1% while the Klang Valley’s ICU rate is at 73.6%.
