Covid-19: Funeral, workplace outbreaks among 16 new clusters

PETALING JAYA: A funeral, close contact with an interstate traveller, and infected colleagues are among the causes that sparked 16 new Covid-19 clusters on Monday (July 12).

Out of the 16 new clusters, eight are community clusters, five stemmed from workplaces and the remaining three from high-risk groups, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

The community clusters are named Kampung Kendaie in Sarawak; Ketior Dalam in Perak; Rantau Kesidang in Pahang; Lorong Kubur Maras, Kampung Pulau Kundur and Jalan Dusun Langar in Kelantan; as well as Tok Molor and Tanjung Gelam in Terengganu.

The Kampung Kendaie cluster in Lundu, Sarawak, involved a funeral ceremony on June 30 and the index case for this cluster is a 57-year-old man who tested positive on July 10 after starting to experience symptoms on July 7.

There are currently 23 Covid-19 cases in this cluster.

In Kuala Kangsar, Perak, the index case for the Ketior Dalam cluster was a 37-year-old woman who was a close contact of an individual who had travelled from Selangor to Perak.

The index case tested positive on July 5 and currently, there are 14 cases in this cluster.

Meanwhile, the five workplace clusters are Industri Jalan Utas and Resort Sepang in Selangor; Tapak Bina Jalan Cendana in Kuala Lumpur; Lorong Sentosa Satu in Negri Sembilan and Putrajaya 15 in Putrajaya.

Out of the overall 16 new clusters, the Industri Jalan Utas cluster has the highest total number of infections at 35, with the cluster being identified following targeted workplace screening.

This cluster involved workers at a factory located at Jalan Utas 5/7, Seksyen 15, Shah Alam.

The remaining three clusters, which involved high-risk groups included the Bayam Tiga cluster in Selangor which involved a total of nine infected staff and residents at a welfare home in Jalan Bayam 3, Taman Desa Jarom, Jenjarom, Kuala Langat.

The Seksyen 14 Jalan Bayam cluster in Kelantan has 10 overall cases and the Taman Utama Satu cluster in Johor has eight.

Both of these clusters involved medical centres with infected employees.
