Man who allegedly attacked fireman in Sarawak arrested

SIBU: A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a fireman who was fighting a fire in Kampung Belipat, Lawas here.

Lawas OCPD Deputy Supt Roslan Leman said the suspect was arrested on Sunday (June 20).

"The suspect has been remanded for four days to assist investigations under Section 186 and Section 332 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty and voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty," he said.

A team of seven firemen from Bomba Lawas station was dispatched to the scene after a house in the village caught fire at about 3.18pm on Saturday (June 19).

Footage captured by a firemen's video camera attached to his helmet shows the suspect attacking the fireman from behind and before he was stopped by other villagers.

The fireman made a police report at 9.14pm the same day but withdrew it after the suspect apologised.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman said they decided to take stern action against the suspect after receiving advice from higher-ups.

Khirudin said the department filed a report at the Lawas police station.
