KOTA KINABALU: Hardcore poor students who will be sitting for their SPM, STPM and STAM exams will get free laptops as part of the state government’s Bantuan Ihsan Komputer (Baik) programme.

Speaking about Baik, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the distribution of a total of 10,000 laptops from July 19 to Oct 18 is the programme's first phase and added that the state Cabinet has green-lit this RM15mil programme.

"Those selected will be students whose parents or guardians are categorised as hardcore poor in the e-Kasih list. It will take about three months to distribute the laptops. The state government hopes it will assist needy students," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 6).

Hajiji added that this is how the state government is hoping to help the students so that they will not be left out of the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) programme.

He said these laptops will be distributed to a total of 9,842 students from national secondary schools (SMK) and national vernacular secondary schools (SMJK) as well as 158 from the Sekolah Menengah Agama Negeri (SMAN).

He said prior to this, the state Cabinet agreed to set up a committee to be jointly chaired by the state's Special Tasks Minister and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister to find ways to assist poor students so that they would not be left out of the online study programme.

The Special Tasks Ministry will be responsible for preparing the list of eligible students who fit the criteria set by the State Education Department, while the State Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation will identify and decide laptops for eligible students.

Hajiji said the chosen laptops will be from various brands such as Acer, Lenovo and Dell and could also be used by the students when they pursue further studies.

Earlier this year, Hajiji had stated that the State government will provide needy students with gadgets for their online learning following the implementation of the movement control order.
