‘Let’s achieve herd immunity’

KUALA LUMPUR: To commemorate Wesak Day today, Buddhist Chief High Priest of Malaysia Datuk K Sri Dhammaratana has called on people of all faiths to support the national immunisation drive.

He said Buddhists should set a good example by helping the country to achieve herd immunity.

“Global medical experts have stated that vaccinating more than 70% of the population to achieve herd immunity is the most effective plan to fight the pandemic. So we should all unite on this, regardless of religion or race, ” he said after receiving his first Covid-19 vaccine at the Ti-Ratana Welfare Society home here yesterday.

Also present were Deputy National Unity Minister Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, Ti-Ratana Welfare Society president Datuk Seri KK Chai and Hospital Sungai Buloh board of visitors director Brandon Ng.

The Health Ministry had made a special arrangement to vaccinate the old folk at the home. Also taking his first dose was Ti-Ratana adviser Datuk Liu Thim Soon.

After receiving his vaccine, Dhammaratana said he had done his part to protect others as a responsible person. The High Priest, who is the founder of the society, called on Buddhists all over the country to offer prayers and bless Covid-19 frontline personnel on the occasion of Wesak Day.

“While the whole country is struggling to fight the pandemic, believers should link the practice of precepts, samadhi and wisdom with real life. Let us pray for peace and healing, ” he said.

He said that although Wesak Day was being held under the new normal, this should not prevent Buddhists from strengthening and spreading their positive energy to honour the birth, enlightenment and Nirvana of Buddha.
