Covid-19: New cases outnumber recoveries, four deaths put total casualties at 1,308


PETALING JAYA: The number of new Covid-19 cases outnumbered recoveries after 1,285 new cases were detected in the country on Thursday (April 8).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 1,175 people recovered, bringing the cumulative number of patients discharged to 340,242.

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 14,203.

Dr Noor Hisham added that Selangor recorded the highest daily cases at 374.

"Of this number, 292 were detected from existing clusters and close contact screenings," he said in a statement.

Selangor was followed by Sarawak with 211 cases and Penang with 162.

Of the new cases, 1,268 were locally transmitted while 17 were imported.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 105 cases that were reported were from prison and Immigration detention depot clusters involving the Jalan Harapan prison cluster (89 cases), Tembok Sri Aman cluster (six), Pagar Bukit Chagar cluster (four), Tembok Taiping cluster (two), Pengkalan Chepa cluster (two), Tembok Mempaga cluster (one), and the Tembok Tapah cluster (one).

Currently, 186 patients are in intensive care, with 81 requiring ventilator support.

Four deaths were recorded, bringing the death toll to 1,308 cases.

The total number of cases recorded in the country to date is 355,753.
