Indian national arrested for alleged sexual assault of teenager

KOTA KINABALU: An Indian national was arrested for allegedly outraging the modesty of his 15-year-old worker and attempting to rape her at a sundry shop in the Sinsuran area here.

The 33-year-old suspect was arrested after the girl lodged a police report about the assault at the store of the sundry shop at around 2.30pm last Sunday (March 25).

She claimed that she was tidying up the store on the 1st floor of the shop when the suspect came in and assaulted her with the intention to rape her.

The girl subsequently screamed for help and managed to escape. She returned to the sundry shop, where she continued work as usual until closing time.

Kota Kinabalu City acting police chief Supt George Abd Rahman said the victim lodged a police report on the same day at 10pm after she collected her wages for the day.

He said the victim had claimed to be 18 years old when she started work at the sundry shop on March 24.

The victim was referred to the Likas Woman and Children's Hospital for medical examination.

He said the suspect was being investigated for sexual assault against a child under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The suspect remains under police remand.
