KUALA LUMPUR: The powers under the Emergency Ordinance should only be used to control the spread of Covid-19, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).
The Umno president said efforts must be taken to restore and recover the functions of the Federal Constitution and parliamentary democracy as soon as the aim of the Emergency proclamation has been achieved.
“Since the rationale given by the Prime Minister is to control the Covid-19 pandemic, all powers under the Emergency Ordinance must only be focused on managing the spread of the infection, ” he said in a statement.
In a televised address to the nation yesterday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had assented to proclaiming a state of emergency nationwide until Aug 1 to curb the pandemic.
Shortly after the announcement, the Umno political bureau convened a special meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre here to discuss the matter.
Zahid said Umno welcomed the proclamation made by the King under Article 150 of the Federal Constitution as advised by the Prime Minister.
He expressed his hope that during the Emergency, the principles of human rights, civil liberty, transparency and rule of law be guaranteed.
“The government must also look after the interest of the rakyat and fulfill its promises including resolving various issues that touch on people’s livelihoods, such as EPF withdrawals without any conditions, an extension of the loan repayment moratorium, and others, ” he said.
