JOHOR BARU: The first day of 2021 saw 41 people being relocated to two temporary relief centres after their houses were flooded.
Those affected were from Kampung Laut near Skudai and Kampung Pengkalan Rinting near Tampoi here.
In the first case, a total of 33 people from seven families in Kampung Laut at Batu 10 were sent to a temporary relief centre (PPS) at SK Batu 10, after their house was inundated.
Skudai Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Riduan Akhyar said the department was notified about the matter at 12.37pm yesterday.
He said they deployed one fire truck and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle with 11 firemen to the location.
“The water rose about two feet. We ordered all villagers to move out from their homes after the water level continued to rise, ” he said, adding that the operation ended at around 3.30pm.
Larkin Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Suhaimi Abdul Jamal said another eight people from Kampung Pengkalan Rinting were transferred to PPS Kampung Pasir multipurpose hall.
“The incident occurred at 2.49pm and we deployed one fire truck, and one EMRS vehicle with 17 personnel to the location to help the people there move to a safe location, ” he said.
In a statement, Kluang Civil Defence Force said that a flash flood had also occurred in Kahang, Kluang, involving three areas namely Yap Tau Sah residential area, Kampung Contoh and Kampung Palembang.
“There are also roads that have been submerged namely Jalan Kluang-Mersing, Jalan Mengkibol-Rengam, Jalan Batu 4-Mersing, and Jalan Kluang-Mersing (near PPNJ Kahang).
“The cause of the flood is due to the continuous rain from the morning, ” it said.
It added that water had started to recede and constant surveillance in the area would also be conducted.
