Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for nine states, KL and Putrajaya until 6pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across nine states and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, effective until 6pm on Sunday (Aug 16).

In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Pokok Sena, Kota Setar, Sik, Baling and Pendang, while Perak will see storms in Hulu Perak.

On the east coast and inland areas, severe weather is expected in Gua Musang in Kelantan, alongside Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang and Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu. Pahang will also see storms in Cameron Highlands, Bera, Rompin, Pekan and Jerantut.

In the central region, the warning covers Hulu Langat, Sepang, Petaling, Gombak and Kuala Langat in Selangor, alongside both WP Kuala Lumpur and WP Putrajaya.

Further south, the alert extends to several areas in Negeri Sembilan (Jempol, Tampin, Seremban, Kuala Pilah, Jelebu and Rembau), as well as Segamat, Kota Tinggi and Mersing in Johor.

Over in East Malaysia, the alert spans northern Sarawak, affecting Miri (Miri and Marudi) and Limbang.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 1.40pm on Sunday.
