MELAKA: It was an emotional ground-breaking event for a new Montfort Youth Centre (MYC) building here when its director Bro Peter K wept while giving his speech.“We waited a decade to realise our dream of having an additional building to offer free education.
“I thank God this day has finally arrived,” he said while tearing up at the ceremony on Saturday.
The first phase of the RM8mil building comprises a multipurpose hall, four badminton courts, a dining hall and classrooms, among others.Located at Kampung Baru Ayer Salak, MYC nurtures youths through character-forming guidance and skills training in motor vehicle and computer maintenance.
Well known for running the Monfort Boys Town in Shah Alam for the past 49 years, the Brothers of St Gabriel established MYC in Sabah (1999) and in Ayer Salak (2001).
Besides classroom lectures and studies, workshop training and on-
the-job stints, MYC students undergo character formation workshops and counselling sessions.
MYC Board of Governors chairman Lawrence Prosper said the first phase of the project was expected to be completed by the end of next year.
He said in the second phase, MYC would build a training workshop and disabled-friendly dormitory.
“With the completion of these buildings, MYC will be able to accommodate more youths and offer new courses,” he said.
