KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi has denied claims that he insulted Malaysian security forces who fought during the 2013 Kg Tanduo intrusion in Lahad Datu.

"I would never insult and have never made fun of the security forces", said the Parti Warisan Sabah’s candidate for the Segama state seat.

He said the video showing a short clip of him supposedly insulting the security forces in the intrusion was taken out of context as it did not show his whole speech.

“However, I would like to sincerely apologise if anyone, especially our security forces feel insulted or are hurt by that part of my speech, ” he said in a statement here Monday (Sept 21).

Mohamaddin is getting backlash from social media users and other politicians after the video went viral.

He said that part of his speech was taken out of context as he was actually explaining the previous Barisan Nasional government’s failure in tackling the undocumented migrant issue.

He said he was also explaining about the hardships faced by security forces in handling the intrusion that happened due to Barisan’s alleged inability to solve the perennial issue of illegal entry to Sabah.

“I would never belittle, let alone insult our security forces who had put their lives at risk, and some who had given up theirs for the sovereignty of our nation, ” Mohamaddin said.

He said his whole speech should have been recorded and shared for people to fully understand what he was trying to say.

“I condemn the acts of whoever it is that took only that part of my speech and circulated it, for obvious reasons to make Parti Warisan Sabah look bad, ” he said.

“Therefore, I hereby wish to stress that I never insulted our security forces who had served in the Tanduo intrusion, ” Mohamaddin said.

Earlier on Monday, a video of the Lahad Datu MP, saying that the 2013 shootout with Sulu militants in Tanduo was “just a show” to gain votes and help Barisan win the 13th General Election, was widely circulated.

In the video, he was seen claiming that military aircraft and tanks were deployed to Tanduo, about 37km from Lahad Datu town, to fight off invaders but destroyed oil palm plantations instead.

Mohamaddin was also seen saying in the video that the only enemies the military had to fight off were "chickens and dogs” and that the "show" was over after the GE13 results were announced.

He also claimed in the video that in his travels to the area, he had never encountered any invaders who tried to claim Sabah as theirs.
