GEORGE TOWN: The wet weather failed to dampen Hari Raya Haji celebrations here as the Muslim community gathered at Al Malik Khalid Mosque at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to slaughter 15 goats and 13 cows under strict standard operating procedure (SOP).

The sacrificial ceremony went on smoothly yesterday with the university’s auxiliary policemen keeping a close watch to ensure all requirements for crowd control were adhered to.

USM Islamic Centre director Ustaz Mohd Shukri Osman said barring a large crowd from taking part in this annual affair was in adherence to the requirements set by the Penang Islamic Religious Council.

“The council permits 10 volunteers for each animal. But we have just 80 volunteers in attendance. All of them had been thoroughly screened at the university’s health centre, ” he said.

The meat, packed in bags, was later distributed to people in need after the congregational prayers in the afternoon.

“We allocated 300kg to some 300 underprivileged families and another 50kg for the 50 international students who are residing here.

“To claim the meat, they have to produce coupons from their respective surau, ” said Shukri.

Over at the Penang State Mosque in Jalan Masjid Negeri, some 500 Muslims turned up for prayers in the morning.

There was no sacrificial ceremony this year.

Among those present were Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman.
