PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a suspect for sexually harassing two DAP assemblymen online.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the 40-year-old man was arrested on Thursday (May 28) at around 12.50pm.
“He admitted to making the comment on social media and he is also believed to have made the same comments against MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong," ACP Nik Ezanee said.
The case is being investigated for criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of a person, exhibiting obscene material, and improper use of network facilities.
ACP Nik Ezanee said the suspect is believed to have mental problems and has been undergoing psychiatric treatment since 2016.
Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin lodged a police report on May 22 after receiving threatening messages of rape and murder on social media.
Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei had also received the same threat but has not lodged a report.
The duo received support from leaders from both sides of the political divide who condemned the act.
Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto called on society to fight back against such acts.
“Cyberbullying, hate speech, stalking and harassment must be countered. Hate speech is not free speech, ” she said on Twitter.
Kasthuri also thanked Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said for her support on Twitter.
“Enough is enough. It’s 2020! Only cowards would ‘Baling Batu Sembunyi Tangan’ (a Malay proverb), ” said the Umno supreme council member who also called for women politicians to unite against such acts.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki also showed his support, saying sexual harassment was an uncivilised act.
“Everyone should condemn this act and those behind this ought to be harshly punished, ” he said
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said any form of sexual harassment is a crime and should not be dismissed or allowed in society.
