Covid-19: 217 new cases, death toll now at 53 (updated)


PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia recorded a rise of 217 new Covid-19 cases on Friday (April 3), bringing the country’s total to 3,333 confirmed infections.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the new cases, 58 were linked to the tabligh assembly cluster in Masjid Seri Petaling.

There are also three more fatalities in the same 24-hour span, taking Malaysia’s death toll to 53.

Dr Noor Hisham said that the 51st death (case number 2,561) was that of a female Malaysian aged 84.

She had a history of heart disease and was admitted at Sungai Buloh Hospital on March 12, and then sent to the National Heart Institute. She died at 1.07pm on Thursday (April 2).

"The 52nd death (case number 2,122) was that of a local man aged 52 who was treated at Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Negri Sembilan on March 18. He died at 7.55am on Friday.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 53rd death (case number 2,034) was that of a female Malaysian aged 73, with a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart and kidney problems.

The woman was treated at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Perak on March 24 and died at 9.30am on Friday.

In a press conference, Dr Noor Hisham also said 60 more Covid-19 patients have been discharged after recovering from the disease.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 recovery rate is now at 24.8%.

Currently, there are 108 patients being treated at intensive care units (ICU), with 54 of them requiring ventilators.
