RM5.2mil of drugs seized, 14 nabbed in coordinated raids

GEORGE TOWN: Drugs worth RM5.2mil were seized in eight coordinated raids in four different states.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Ramli Din said the raids were carried out simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Kedah on Sunday (March 1).

“A syndicate group made out of locals and a Thai national which was active in the Klang Valley and Penang was busted.

“It is believed that the drugs are for the local market as well as a neighbouring country.

“The seven-hour operation saw 11 syndicate members, aged between 21 and 53, as well as three underaged children being detained.

“Among them, six have previous criminal or drug records.

“Two of them tested positive for methamphetamine while three tested positive for opiates, ” he said at a press conference at the state police headquarters on Penang Road Tuesday (March 3).

He added that a total of 216.807kg of drugs worth RM5.2mil were seized.

“The other items confiscated were worth RM437,718 with RM51,520 in cash, a watch worth RM1,500 and seven vehicles worth RM384,698.

“The detainees will be remanded for seven days until March 8 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, ” he said.

Also present were Bukit Aman NCID principal assistant director (Intelligence/International Relations) Senior Asst Comm VR. Ravi Chandran, Penang police chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan and Penang NCID chief Asst Comm Maidu Abu Bakar.
