Maszlee: Why would I quit Bersatu?

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite speculation of an exodus of MPs from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Dr Maszlee Malik (pic) says he will remain in the party.

“I was just about to enter the Bersatu building. Why would I be quitting?”

He said this to reporters when met at the Bersatu headquarters at Yayasan Selangor Monday (Feb 24).

Top leaders from Bersatu such as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusoff, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Datuk Marzuki Yahya, Maszlee, Rina Harun and among others, gathered at the party headquarters for a special meeting on Monday (Feb 24).

However, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who resigned earlier Monday from the premiership as well as as Bersatu chairman, was nowhere to be seen in the party’s headquarters.

The Bersatu headquarters was swarmed by scores of reporters as well as supporters, who were heard chanting “hidup Tun” and “hidup Armada”.

Datuk Seri Azmin Ali's political secretary and PKR assemblyman Hilman Idham was also spotted at the event.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not known, but talk is rife that an exodus of MPs from Bersatu would take place.

There is also talk that Dr Mahathir would resign as a Bersatu member.

Earlier, sources told The Star that there were mixed reactions by Bersatu leaders over Muhyiddin’s announcement that Bersatu would quit Pakatan.

It is believed that Dr Mahathir’s resignation as prime minister and Bersatu chairman was due to his objection to cooperating with Umno.
