PETALING JAYA: PAS has dropped its proposal to push for a motion of confidence in Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Parliament after the Pakatan Harapan presidential council’s decision to allow Dr Mahathir to decide on his departure as the country’s leader.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said such a motion was no longer relevant because the ruling coalition’s decision on Friday could effectively stop undemocratic attempts to unseat a sitting prime minister.
“It is no longer relevant to push the proposed motion because the Prime Minister can now focus on the implementation of policies and reviving the economy without undue politically-motivated disturbances and interference,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He said this when asked to comment on Pakatan’s decision not to pressure Dr Mahathir to step down and hand over power to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
PAS had previously announced that they would be pushing for a motion of confidence in Dr Mahathir following persistent calls by Anwar’s supporters to keep to an unwritten promise prior to the 14th General Election.
“When we proposed to push for the motion of confidence, our intention was not to take over the government.
“Now that the democratically-appointed Prime Minister is generally accepted, we can look forward to political stability.
“They (the government) can now focus on discharging their duties and responsibilities without looming uncertainty and confusion.
“They should focus on reviving the economy.
“And we will remain as a constructive Opposition and focus on check and balance,” he added.
However, Takiyuddin said PAS reserved their right to change their stand if the situation warranted it.
“All we want is political stability,” he said.
