Coronavirus: Chinese national admitted to Johor hospital recovers, discharged

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Chinese national who was admitted to the isolation ward in Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru on Jan 24 after being infected with the 2019 novel coronavirus has been discharged.

This is the country's second case of recovery from the infection.

Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic) said in a post on his Facebook page on Saturday (Feb 8) that the results of the third coronavirus test conducted on the man turned out negative.

He said the patient who was confirmed to be the country's fourth coronavirus case fully recovered after being treated with anti-viral medicine Kaletra in an off-label use for eight days from Jan 28.

"After eight days of treatment, the patient’s condition improved and he was fully cured. He was allowed to return home this afternoon, ” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 40-year-old man from Wuhan, China, was admitted to the hospital after showing symptoms of high fever and pneumonia.

He said the patient's condition worsened on the second day which required him to be given oxygen.

"A chest X-ray on the fourth day showed signs of increased severity of infection," he added.

Dr Noor Hisham also congratulated the dedicated medical team led by Infectious Disease specialist Dr Masliza Zaid for the success.

Malaysia recorded its first case of coronavirus recovery when a four-year-old Chinese girl who was treated at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi was fully recovered from the virus and allowed to return home on Feb 2. - Bernama
