PUTRAJAYA: Political rumours serve no benefit at a time when Malaysia and the world are facing the novel coronavirus crisis, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said opportunists will often find ways to destabilise the government, so it is important to rise above petty politics in times of crisis.
“Now, Malaysia and the whole world are faced with a crisis.
“We should be working together towards the betterment of the country.
“A lot of economic activities are affected due to the coronavirus outbreak right now.
“I think all sectors should work together and spend time and energy to fight the coronavirus, and help restore the economy.
“So don’t waste time on political rumours,” said Loke to reporters at his ministry’s Chinese New Year do here on Thursday (Feb 6).
Loke, who is DAP national organising secretary, was asked to comment on speculation of Umno mulling political cooperation with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“There will continuously be rumours here and there.
“And of course, a lot of opportunists want to destabilise the current government.
“As far as we are concerned, the current Pakatan Harapan government under the leadership of Dr Mahathir is strong and stable.
“So don’t waste time on these rumours,” said Loke.
It has been speculated that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is keen to collaborate with Dr Mahathir and support the prime minister to lead the country until the end of his term.
Such a move would prevent the promised power transition to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Umno information chief Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said Ahmad Zahid had merely wanted to seek feedback on the proposed move, adding that the party would reject any political cooperation with DAP.
