MIRI: Sarawakians aged 60 and above can start applying for the "Kenyalang Gold Card" on Wednesday (Jan 15) to enjoy special discounts and privileges at selected food outlets, retail stores and also various services.
Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who is state Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister, said the application form for the gold card would be available statewide today.
"My ministry handed the application forms to all district offices, residents offices and welfare department offices throughout Sarawak this morning.
"Sarawakians aged 60 and above qualify for this card that will give them special privileges at selected retail and service vendors.
"Sarawakians aged 60 and above numbered about 300,000 now.
"That number will reach about 520,000 by 2030," she told a press conference here.
It will take about one month for her ministry to process and issue the gold card, she added.
This gold card project by her ministry is a way to show gratitude and respect for those aged folks who had contributed much to the state and country, she said.
Fatimah was in Miri today to hand out Chinese New Year goodies to poor and handicapped folks at the Dynasty Hotel.
She praised Miri Dynasty Hotel for its annual projects to give festive food and goodies to the needy in Miri.
She said the hotel was doing a good job every year in liasing with the Welfare Department to give such help to the less fortunate such as the handicapped and poor.
Dynasty Hotel Managing Director Tony Pui said the hotel had over the past 20 years been giving food and festive goodies during every Chinese New Year, Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
"This year, we have 150 recipients and we gave each of them food and festive items worth RM150.
"This is one way for us to give back to society in Miri," he said.
